HUMPHRY (Humphrey) PELLEW, of Flushing, near Falmouth, Cornwall. b. 1650, baptised at St. Gluvias in 1665, married 1692, at Breage, Cornwall, Judith Sparnon (who d. 1756 buried at Mylor) and was buried at Mylor 9 Feb. 1721, (aged 71). Was a merchant seaman and ship owner, son of a naval officer, and a man of considerable wealth. Owned property near Falmouth known as Treverry. Also had a property and a tobacco plantation in Maryland, United States of America. Part of the town of Annapolis stands on what was, before the revolt of the colonies, the estate of the Pellews. This was the period in which the "Killigrews" founded and built the town of Falmouth, as an investment. Humphry Pellew who had retired from the sea before the century closed, to live ashore as a ship owner, landowner and proprietor of a tobacco plantation, was prosperous enough to engage in a similar enterprise on the other side of the creek. This was the building of the town of Flushing. Part of the town was built by Samuel Trefusis MP for Penryn; the other part was built by Humphry Pellew who came to live there himself and had issue, (11 children)

Animated by a spirit of true and enlightened patriotism he laboured in situations of great public trust with eminent fidelity
 and zeal for a period of LIII (53) years.
In his life was manifested a bright example of Christian virtue.
He died at Torquay on the XVIIIth day of Feby., A.D. MDCCCXLIII: aged LXXXIX (89) years.
In the same vault are interred the mortal remains of Jane, wife of the above Samuel Humphry Pellew,
who died at Falmouth on the XVIth day of Novr., A.D. MDCCCXXI; aged LXVII (67) years.

EDWARD PELLEW, 1ST VISCOUNT EXMOUTH.

EDWARD PELLEW. Born Tuesday 19 April 1757. Died Wednesday 23 January 1833. (aged 76) at West Cliff House, Teignmouth, Devon. Having early entered the naval service of his country, soon became famed for his seamanship and fighting ability gaining an outstanding record as a frigate captain. Mr Pellew was appointed a Lieut. in 1778 (aged 21) and 1st Lieut. in 1780, and in May of the same year received his commission of post-Capt. On 29 June, 1793, (aged 36) he received the honour of Knight-hood for his heroic conduct in the capturing the Cléopâtra, a French frigate; on 18 March, 1796, (aged 39) he was created a Baronet for his heroic services in saving the troops and crew of the transport Dutton. MP (Member of Parliament) 7 July 1802. On 1 June, 1814, (aged 57) having risen to the rank of Adm. of the Blue, he was elevated to the peerage, as Baron Exmouth, of Canonteign, co. Devon; and, finally, was advanced to a Viscountcy by the title of VISCOUNT EXMOUTH, co. Devon, 10 Dec. 1816, (aged 59) for his gallantry in bombarding and destroying the fleet and arsenal of Algiers in that year. His Lordship m. 28 May 1783 at East Knoyle, Susannah Frowde (b.1765 d. 29 October 1837), 2nd dau. of Sir James Frowde, Bart., of East Knoyle, Wiltshire, and had issue,

Camb. 24 Apr. 1846; B.A., (Bachelor of Arts) 1850; M.A., (Master of Arts) 1853. Rowing 'blue,' 1849.  Incorp. at University College, Oxford, 9 July 1870. One of the founders of Keble College, Oxford; on the Council, 1871-3. Went to America, 1873, where he was naturalized. Organized, with Theodore Roosevelt, Bureau of Charities in New York. Married 1stly, 5 Oct. 1858, Eliza Jay (b. 1823 d. 22 Dec. 1869), dau. of the Hon. Judge William Jay, (b. 16 Jun. 1789) of New York, USA., granddaughter of John Jay (b. 12 Dec. 1745 d. 17 May 1829, President of the continental congress, Governor of NY, Chief Justice of NY Supreme Court, Chief Justice of US Supreme Court) Al. Oxon., Burke, P. and B. (sub Exmouth); Fox-Davies, Armorial Families) and had issue,
